I see there are iPhone apps now that allow mobile point of sale transactions to be carried out. It makes the mind boggle to imagine the future of mobile payments that such technology enables. Naturally, the number one concern will be ensuring the security of such transactions.

Mike,

Just seeing this tonight...interesting post. My thought on the mobile payments at the physical point of sale is that doing it via SMS is not faster, easier, or simpler than using the traditional means - cash or credit. As for those without credit cards or cash, they probably don't make up enough of a particular merchants base to go through the hassle. I do believe that NFC mobile payments - linked to existing payment accounts like credit, debit, pre-paid, etc will make inroads at the physical POS. What needs to happen for this to occur? A business model where all the stakeholders are able to get their piece. So, it is not an issue of technology but rather business model - will people use it and how is the $$ shared. Just my quick thoughts.
