True, there are differences between different versions of iPhones, but they have way less impact on the average developer than the differences we run into in trying to support something like the Razr.

Did you read the article? Cause it, and most comments, are pretty good. Titles are generally written by editors, not writers, and they don't always know the subject matter as well.

The point is valid, that there is WAY too much coverage/dicsussion of iPhone relative to actual development work, both in general technical media and amongst us mobile centric designers and technologists.

I also have to remind everyone there are at least four "iPhones." Two Touches, two iPhones. Not sure of all differences, but there are indeed apps (some I'd like) that require the mic, so do not work on the Touch. And this is today. How many variants in a year?
The apple-is-not-fragmented argument is, at best, temporary, and not even totally true today.

There is another factor involved, I think.
If your developing for the iPhone, there is a BIG chance you'll have one (or more) in house. All the different versions of the Razr are harder, and more expensive to buy, hence the use of a service like deviceanywhere, to test on the more uncommon models or firmwares.
I think most mobile developers will still have in house phones. Deviceanywhere will just mean they need to have less of them. So comparing just their numbers doesn't make that much sense, since it's a lot easier to test on an iPhone locally.
