I personally use Hosted Exchange Server coupled with BlackBerry Enterprise Server from 123Together (http:www.123together.com). I have to have constant mobile access to my Outlook, files and attachments. I rarely surf the web for anything more than directions and restaurants. I'm really not sure this will ever change for most folks. Won't that have an impact on how refined the various options evolve? Demand will keep things as they are I would imagine. Another thing we believe that may help to expand the mobile web usage is the creation of content-specific embedded applications (eg. Java apps), specially for some very used websites (like Facebook or Orkut in our case down here).
