No, it doesn't do it 'on reboot' just when you open a terminal.. but I've never needed the | character outside the terminal anyways... I must have done something along the line to mess up the mapping or change the keyboard type. Thanks for the info! I have to use 'Chr' to get a pipe symbol ('|') though. If it's not available on the device itself, you can use an ssh-tunneled X11 connection to perform the modifications. Also, you may want to use xev to get the proper key codes.
