Nokia's newly released N96 ships with S60 3rd edition - feature pack 2 supporting Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) which uses the data connection of your phone to download software updates. Boy is it annoying. You allow 2 hours to update the firmware and then you mess around for hours with the restore option. I tried it about 5 times, using older versions. The first time, the restore seemed to go perfectly, but there were no contacts, no messages. So I tried with the next to last backup and that just stopped working with the CPU at 100%. So I tried it again leaving it go for 25 minutes and it also didn't work. I like that Nokia produce new versions of their software, but why do they have to produce such cruddy backup software. And I really need that! But as you are saying "after years and years or having my hopes and dreams dashed by mobile devices it’s no longer possible to disappoint me": I restored the calendar (and others) from that very same N95 backup to my old 6630 instead and put the N95 back to its box...
