Mobile Flash Games

SmartMobs had a link to Playyoo, a community site for mobile flash games developers. I sent a message to my N95 and tried out a few of the games. The site isn’t public yet, but they have a dozen games or so, and they seem to work well on the N95. Here are some shots of the site and the blackjack game:

The games work well, they just pop up and play from with the browser, simple and slick. There were a few quirks in places, like I have my phone setup for silent and not all of the games were silent. But overall pretty slick.

FlashLite could really make some waves when it comes to mobile development I think. Unfortunately the system as a whole seems to remain closed. If I could create flash apps for free I would give it a try, but the tools all seem to be commercial and there are no open source alternatives (unless you count stuff like VNC outputting and playing flash video content). There’s a thriving community for flash games already on the web, I’m curious how much more would be out there if the tools weren’t all expensive and closed.

    Miker,

I did a little research on Flash Lite just a while ago specificly on this topic.

Sadly, the money is just not there (yet) if you are an indie Flash lite developer — and most consumer still expect their Flash game to be free (learned from the PC side).

OTOH, there’s a “decent” ecosystem on the Adobe + Verizon’s Brew platform where developer can get paid. ‘Mind you, similar business model in Japan too (DoCoMo).

Check out this post by the Pikkel folks in Japan:

Speaking of Flash Lite, they are actually facing their own problem of fragmentation on 1.1 (HUGE install base), 2.0 (actually useful to develop on) and the upcoming 3.0 release. Things are not pretty…

IMHO, it’s up to Adobe to put some serious effort to push the Flash Lite platform. It’s HUGE opportunity.

Finally, on the alternative side, SVG been around for many year which Adobe “toyed” with for the longest time. But in the Adobe + Macromedia world, SVG is clearly not the favorite son anymore. Expect Adobe to do more and Flash lite while SVG might soon be forgotten (sadly).

I know this is an old post but since google brought it up…..this is the future (lol), and version 3.0 is out. Flash lite has become the favourite son (as predicted), and flash lite games have become known everywhere, and not lony in Japan.

There is a tool [Flash Develop] that is totally free and can be used to develop flash lite games so its not all commercial anymore.

Hope this will be the needed push to convince someone to start developing…FAST!!!!

I’m managing a portal flash games with over 3000 games. I bought the game licenses which is packaged with the arcade script. I never knew about flash Lite games but certainly try it asap on my cell. Flash developers can get great incomes by selling their game with a sponsor link on it. People can pay a lot of money to the developers.
