Solving the Problem at a Different Level

Probably the best comment about mobile that I’ve seen in a while is attached to one of Pete’s photos of a cab driver with three phones:

Our cabbie in boston had not one, not two, but THREE cell phones! Talk about solving something at the hardware level that should be addressed further up the stack.

Ha! I knew when people said things like “in some countries cell phone penetration is more than 100 percent” that there was something that just pissed me off about that, but I had trouble putting my finger on why. It’s because the very fact that the penetration could possibly go above 100 percent is indicative of underservicing the market in some capacity. Yet then the number is used as evidence of how well the market is doing. Phew, feels so much better to understand what was going on there.

I could keep rambling on about how we need to shift to person focused services instead of device focused services, and how open interfaces at the carrier/operator level might help to address some of the issues that people are addressing suboptimally as end users. You all know that schpeal already though, right? I’m tired of talking about it, off to make it happen.
