Hey Martin, I would actually disagree somewhat there. Many users of the mobile web aren't coming into the medium in the task-oriented way I had expected them to. In the areas where the real growth is happening the mobile web is the only web, and people are browsing around on it the same way they did on the early wired web. They're out there looking for new services and sites and trying to find them on their phone. In that sense cost of discovery is the real hindrance, and flat rate encourages exploration much more so than prepaid.

Hey Mike,

"I kept getting the question about what’s the best way to increase mobile web usage"

In my opinion, flatrate data surely helps once people see the value of mobile Internet access but it doesn't attract a lot of people to try out things. Most people who are ready to experiment like students are on prepaid in Europe. Therefore, I think offering mobile data on prepaid for a reasonable price will do much more than flatrates. A number of MVNOs in Germany have just made such a move: http://mobilesociety.typepad.com/mobile_life/2007/02/pre3gsm_prepaid.html

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks for the name check... ;-) one thing that struck me was a) the immutable rise of web content, despite being relegated to the hall way up at the top of the Fira.

The other was the developing world vibe - lots of talk of racing to roll out GSM networks across Africa & South America, but also the quick rise of services behind that (e.g. micropayments, web access etc). Even came to the fore here

I was suprised myself about the presence of Linux.
I also stopped by the Panasonic booth and spoke to a representative about the LiMo foundation and the future they see. Too bad they have no plans to distribute any device outside of the Japan at least for the next couple of years!
