The same thing happened to me today (second day with the E61). It works fine if you manually check for email but the Message menu freezes when it's in automatic email checking mode. I was able to get out of this situation by shutting the phone off.

Hey Ben, I ended the connection by exiting fully out of messenger and then holding down the red call hangup key until the active packet connections said they were exiting (which in my case, did happen, there was an active connection). I would assume that a soft reset would accomplish the same thing however, so it sounds like you might have been hitting a different issue.

Hi Mike,

I've been using the E61 for a week and while I've been impressed by its feature-set, there are have been a few issues that have caused me frustration.

The first is when my E61 reboots itself randomly. Sometimes when it's synching with my PC, other times when I'm reading mail or surfing the web.

The second gripe relates to the messaging features. Like you, the other day, after reading an email, I was unable to get to any of the "Messaging" functions. If I tried to read my text messages or clicked on the email key, the "Messaging" heading would appear for a second before returning me to the standby screen. I though turning my E61 would solve the problem but that didn't work. I then turned it off and pulled the battery out. That didn't work. I tried a soft reset to no avail and was finally forced to perform a hard reset which wiped all my existing messages and settings. An hour or so later after entering all my personalised settings I was up and running.

In your blog above, you said you ended the email connection and things went back to normal. How did you do this? Did you end active connections in the "Connection Manager"? I'm really curious as I'm worried the messaging applications on my E61 will foul-up again and don't wish to perform a hard reset.

[...] Seeing as how I couldn’t get my typical email setup working well on the E61, I decided to poke around with some alternatives. I’ve been using Google Mail to get notifications for work already. They have an option to forward all messages but keep them in the inbox, which I have setup to forward all inbound emails to my TMobile SMTP gateway address. SMS notifications on inbound messages, and effective history, so it’s what I’ve been using for informational messages from the production servers. They have a nice mobile interface as well that’s usable from a browser. [...]
