[...] And most people respond to what with “God.. what is Yahoo thinking? Do they not want people to use their APIs?” It’s not Yahoo, I’m 99.9% sure I know where that comes from. It’s exactly because of the thing I said before: “I can do most of the useful stuff with a simple phone and GPS so why do I need Garmin.” And then people say: “But why would Yahoo do that to protect Garmin? Is Yahoo making a device with them or something?” No, it’s not Garmin either. Look one level further up in the chain, to the folks I complained about in my last posting about LBS.
Agree about the operator barrier. It's quite impossible to experiment. However, I think that things will change with apparition of GPS enabeld phone, with a low barrier for experimentation.
The real barrier then will be deployment....

Good writeup. I agree w/ this and w/ Charlie.

Bringing to market a handset-based LBS app requires a lot of relationships :-). I've experienced this firsthand. But, good news is that network operators are opening up, and listening. Except for Nextel, it has just taken years for this to happen. And again, they will listen even more closely, if you know someone from the inside. That's the way it is, due to the nature of mobility and location and privacy, an so on.
